Navigating a TPO – Advice from Your Local Tree Surgeons in East Grinstead | DR Newland Tree Care & Fencing

Before our tree surgeons spring into action, helping you deal with an on-going concern around a tree on your East Grinstead property, we’ll need to consider whether a TPO is present. In this blog, we explain exactly what this means.

What is a TPO?

TPO stands for Tree Preservation Order. They’re drawn up by your local authority – in this instance East Grinstead – and look to protect/preserve particular trees for reasons around aesthetics and cultivating a healthy environment and local ecosystem. They can be applied to both single trees and particular areas. A common myth our tree surgeons regularly hear is that certain trees are automatically subject to TPOs, but this isn’t true.

If a tree on your property is protected by a TPO then you cannot, without express permission:

  • Cut it down
  • Top or lop it
  • Uproot or move it
  • Wilfully damage it

TPOs do not cover shrubs, hedges and bushes.

How do I find out if a TPO is present?

East Grinstead Council will have a database that carries information of all present TPOs. Before calling in our tree surgeons, it’s worth giving them a call or email to find out if any trees on your land are protected. We recommend doing this research prior to purchasing an East Grinstead property which may have ailing or unwanted trees present.

Who is responsible for specimens protected by TPOs?

You are responsible for the condition of the tree, and honouring the specifics of the TPO.

Can I still get tree surgeons in, despite a TPO?

Yes, but only with express written permission from East Grinstead council. Our tree surgeons are happy to help clients in securing this permission should they wish for a guiding hand. Should you initially be refused, there is an official appeals process – so don’t give up hope. Sometimes it’s simply a case of showing the authority that the proposed work will safeguard the future condition of the tree far more than simply leaving it to suffer an on-going health concern, or developmental problem.

DR Newland has cemented its reputation as the go-to tree surgeons in East Grinstead. To discuss proposed work with our friendly team, pick up the phone and call 01342 821 196.
